What is Shareware?
Shareware is a method of selling and marketing software, not a type of program. In fact, the `try-before-you-buy` TBYB method of selling software was invented by the traditional `shelfware` companies, but nowadays many major software companies offer free trial versions of their software. Some of these trial versions are shareware, and some are not. Traditionally, shareware is software created by authors who hope for the power of word-of-mouth advertising. It is actually more than `just a trial software', as it has the function of being shared among friends for free. If the product meets your expectations, you can just buy the finished version, which usually means that you buy the product directly from the author, and if you need support for the product, you can get a direct and quick response. You can see that this is not the same as calling a help desk and getting a pre-prepared response.
shareEDGE was established with the mission of promoting the spread of the try-before-you-buy ( TBYB ) sales method in Japan, as advocated by the Association of Shareware Professionals (hereinafter referred to as ASP), as an alternative to traditional software retailing methods, gradually reducing the still widespread gap between domestic and overseas software technology, and making it easier to develop software download businesses using the shareware method.
Nowadays, there are more opportunities to obtain overseas software, but due to the uniqueness of Japanese culture and operating systems, it is still difficult for users to get their hands on these hidden excellent products. Similarly, overseas software vendors, although aware of the market potential in Japan, find it difficult to judge the investment benefits of entering the market.
The shareEDGE project selects and introduces shareware from around the world that is available today and has received excellent evaluation results. In addition, shareEDGE evaluates the quality, functionality, and product concept of the selected software in a Japanese environment using shareEDGE's unique method, and introduces only the selected shareware along with the evaluation results.
